X9C103 Digital Potmeter UP/DOWN
Controlling a Xicor X9C103 by an AT90S1200 with a normal potentiometer

X9C103 solid-state digipot:

This circuit enables you to control an X9C103 by a standard potmeter. This little digipot has 100 wiper positions. The S/N ratio is -120 dB, which is very good!
Part list:

1x AT90S1200-12PI
1x X9C103 (Xicor)
1x 78L05
2x 1N4007
1x 8MHz resonator
1x 22pF
1x 47uF/16V
1x 100n polycarbonate
3x 100n multilayer
1x 10k ohm
1x 820 ohm
1x 100k trimpot
1x 10k lin. potmeter
The software....

Here you can download the X9C103 datasheet.

Here a part of the assembly which does the trick, well the rest is up to you.
(X9C103 can be replaced by X9C303. The X9C303 has a logaritmic wiper scale)

X9C103 controlled by mechanical rotary encoder:

The diagram shows how a Xicor X9C103 can be connected to a shaft encoder (aka: 2bit rotary gray encoder) controlled by an AT90S2313 AVR microcontroller. Each step is 1/100 of the totall audio level at the input (attenuator) Clockwise turn is volume increase, counter clockwise turn is lowering the volume.
Part list:

1x AT90S2313-10PI
1x X9C103 (Xicor)
1x 78L05
2x 1N4007
1x 4MHz resonator
1x 47uF/16V
1x 100n MKH
2x 100n multilayer
